Camp Quality

Camp Quality Illinois Cruise 2011Our morning to teach at Camp Quality will be Friday, August 12 from 9 to noon. Our project will be felt nautical flags in the letters the child chooses (my initials are flagged above).

We need volunteers to teach on the 12th, volunteers to help cut felt pieces and plan how to lead this project on Tuesday July 26 (location to be determined), and donations of felt and perle cotton and size 20-22 chenille needles.
The felt colors should come close to matching DMC White, 742 Gold, 796 Blue and 321 Red.
It doesn't take much perle so felt is the most needed item.

NANI Outreach photo

The GLR webmaster took a photo of our display at the fall Great Lakes Regional meeting on Saturday. She's posted it on the GLR webpage gallery.

The display featured items from all the years of our teaching at Camp Quality from the collections of Carol P and Marjorie H. Go here and scroll to the bottom of the page to see it.

Belated Thanks

Thanks a bunch to everyone who came out to help prepare materials for Camp Quality. We had a great group: Janet Charleston, Renee Stern, Renee Reimer, Sue Hansen, Pat Bellinger, Karen Pinta, Cathryn Wurzer. We chatted as we cut plastic canvas and yarn into usable lengths and tied it into bundles. Each camper will get canvas, a hank of yarn, a dog tag, and a needle.

We will be teaching at Camp Quality on the morning of Friday, August 7th. We're still looking for teachers.

Camp Quality meeting

We need to have a meeting to cut the plastic canvas and yarn Renee so generously donated and get it ready for Camp Quality on August 6th. We haven't scheduled it yet and only one person signed up--so if you have a prefered date, please let Marjorie Holme know. (holme9 at gmail dot com) We are thinking about Thursdays--either the 15th or the 29th. I'll try and schedule it at the Munster Library. Please come and help! Thanks!

We also need teachers for Camp Quality. So far we only have three! Camp runs from about 8:30am to noon and we're invited to join the campers for lunch. Friday August 6. Please contact Marjorie if you can come. Thanks.

NANI Outreach

We have a variety of outreach projects ongoing or coming up. So many it's hard to keep track of them all. Here's an overview:

Stitching:
Hospice of the Calumet Area: We need 2" square stitched designs for their cards* and hand-stitched holiday ornaments, any design or style.*

Hammond Reads: Bookmarks, primarily aimed at children. Standard bookmark sizes are between 2" and 3" wide and 6" and 8" long but other sizes and styles are welcome.* Any designs or materials that you wish. Some designs and more information are available at Stitching for Literacy. This is an EGA outreach project. [We are also collecting new and lightly-used books of all types, for all ages, for Hammond Reads to distribute.]

*Marjorie Holme will have precut pieces of Hardanger fabric, donated to the outreach projects by Karen Uebler, for the Hospice cards, ornaments and Hammond Reads bookmarks at the June meeting. These are all nicely portable projects ideal for summer stitching.

Threads That Bind: We are collecting hand-stitched ornaments for our show boutique. The deadline is the September meeting. All profits go to the chapter. (more details in an upcoming post)

Your finished embroideries! Please don't forget to submit one or more (or many) pieces for display in the show.

Members' Boutique: more details on this opportunity to support the guild and also make a little money for yourself will be in an upcoming post.

Volunteering:
There will be a number of volunteer opportunities for our show. We hope everyone will participate before and during the show. Watch this blog for more details on volunteer sign up for the show.

Camp Quality Illinois: We will be teaching at the Camp on Friday August 6. We will need volunteers one night to help kit the project (date to be determined) and as many volunteers as possible to come and stitch with the kids on the morning of August 6. Camp Quality Illinois is in Frankfort, IL.

Beginning Stitching at the YMCA: We plan to expand our experimental program at the YMCA and make it more organized and formal. It was slow at first but we ended up with nicely sized classes of children and adults. We plan to teach this fall on Thursdays at 6:30pm from September to Thanksgiving. September's project will be a beginning cross stitch sampler, designed by Jamee Jecmen. October will be "tattoo your jeans": how to decorate your clothing with embroidery, something popular with teens right now. November will be simple holiday ornaments. We would like volunteers to commit to coming for one month to work with the beginning students.

Thank you from Marjorie H

Last night we met to make the kits for the Camp Quality project --
There will be 78 campers this year at Camp Quality.

Thanks go to JanetC and her wonderful clubhouse

and to all the members that came:

CarolL, NormaA, SusanP, JameeJ, BettiP, ReneeS, CarolP, SueH,
BethV, KarenP, ClaudiaC and BarbP

What a great group!

We got it all done!

I had loads of fun and I think everyone else did, too. We stenciled and silk screened the designs onto felt and kitted thread and needles to embellish the painted designs.

While a couple tables messed with paints, one table patiently cut freezer paper stencils and another made up 80 baggies with colorful strands of perle cotton and needles and trimmed the painted designs to size.

It was hard for the stencilers and screeners to stop once the design ideas began to flow!

Photos from the evening are on my Flickr page, link here.

Our class at Camp Quality will be

Friday, August 7 from 9am-noon
We have room for more teachers if you'd like to join us.

July 21st: Camp Quality Kit Assembly

Note from MarjorieH:

There will be a meeting to prepare kits for Camp Quality (CQ)

Tuesday, July 21st

7:00pm

at Janet's Clubhouse*

EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO COME

We would like your thoughts & ideas for organizing and presenting the kits, plus teaching the project

I will demonstrate and give you a chance to try two techniques for putting designs on fabric:
freezer paper stencils and silk screen

We will use these techniques to print designs onto felt for the CQ project

FOR THE MEETING:

Please bring yourself in old clothes (acrylic paint doesn't wash out)

(If you don't have any of the items listed below, don't worry--come anyway
We'll have plenty of materials for everyone)

We could use fabric scissors, exacto knives (or small paper scissors), cheap acrylic paints in flower colors, browns or greens, old irons, ironing pads or boards, and cheap foam paintbrushes

DONATIONS NEEDED:

We can always use felt pieces (larger than 4" x 6")

We need size 18-20 needles (chenille or tapestry) for the kits

I think we have a good quantity of perle cotton now

*Location:
Janet's Clubhouse aka The Gerogetown Homes Clubhouse

Hammond, IN
